OUTSIDE, THEY PUT ON their helmets, climbed on his Goldwing, and rode down the driveway and out onto the road. As hot as it was, thank goodness the breeze cooled them off. Turning down Main Street, Frank coasted past the city hall and the library. He slowed down and drove off the road into Mercedes Vernon’s driveway.

“Where are we?” Abigail queried, her eyes going to the house they had parked in front of.

“The waitress’s house. The one Derek Krantz supposedly has run off with. Mercedes Vernon’s house,” Frank answered, getting off the bike. “There’s something I want to check on. You stay here with the bike. I won’t be long, honey.”

Frank made his way to the front door. Knocked. No answer. He noticed all the mail was still overflowing the mailbox. The package remained on the porch. So, no one had been here to collect it. Strange. No one, nothing moved in the windows. The curtains were still drawn shut. The house still had that empty feel to it. The grass had grown up even more. Weeds were everywhere. He worked his way around the building. Nothing looked any different than the day he and the sheriff had visited it the week before.

Coming around to the front again, he tried the front door. As before it was open. He slipped inside, and quickly walked through the first floor. The place was still a mess. Trash everywhere. It still had a bad odor, too. That’s what happened when garbage was left sitting out to decay for weeks.

He didn’t think anyone was in the house or had been there for days. Mercedes hadn’t come back home. Though, if as Vanessa had said, she’d skipped off with Derek, she might not have wanted to revisit her home. He wandered into the bedroom. The purse, with the wallet and phone inside, that had been on the dresser before, was gone. Hmm, could be Mercedes had stopped by. At least, long enough to get her purse and phone. But why hadn’t she collected her mail, or the package? Good question.

After checking a few other things, he left the house, closing the door behind him, and locking it. No sense in making it any easier for burglars to break in.

“Satisfied?” Abigail was perched on the seat of the Goldwing, helmet cradled in her arms. She was looking at him with an amused expression. She knew exactly what he’d been up to.

“I guess.” Though in truth he wasn’t satisfied at all. Something was nagging at him. Just a feeling in his gut. Something wasn’t right. It hadn’t looked to him as if Mercedes had taken many, if any, of her clothes. Her suitcases had been stacked up in the bottom of her closet. Who would go anywhere without clothes, and suitcases? More strange.

“Still on the job, huh? I thought you’d retired? Really retired?”

“Just wrapping up a few loose ends. That’s all.”

Abigail cocked her head at him, then put her helmet on. “You said a couple of stops. So where are we going next?”

“One more stop.
